The mountain gorilla encounter – Must know about Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and critically endangered mountain gorillas. The park’s history is deeply intertwined with its rich ecological significance and conservation efforts.
Bwindi is one of the oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests in Africa, dating back over 25,000 years. It is home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna, including over 160 species of trees and more than 100 species of ferns.
Bwindi N.P was designated as a forest reserve by the British colonial administration to protect its valuable hardwoods and wildlife in 1932, in 1991, Bwindi N.P was upgraded to a national park, primarily to conserve its unique biodiversity and protect the endangered mountain gorillas. This change was part of a broader effort to promote ecotourism and ensure sustainable management of the forest’s resources.

On our journey to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest N.P, we got the chance to come up close to the mountain Gorillas family of 10 members at Rushaga. The experience was nothing short of magical.
With the guidance of an experienced ranger from Mishaya Safaris, we embarked on a hike through the lush, green forest. The trek, which lasted about an hour and a half.
As we approached the gorilla family, our anticipation grew.

Up Close with the Gorillas

Before entering the park for gorilla tracking, we had to obtain Gorilla permits first. Gorilla permits are official documents that allow tourists to track and spend time with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. They are required for entry into designated gorilla trekking areas, such as Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. The cost varies by country and may fluctuate. As of 2024, permits in Uganda are typically around $700 USD for foreign non-residents, $600 USD for foreign residents, and 250,000 UGX for East African citizens.
Second before the tracking experience, we were briefed on how to behave around the Gorilla family and then we set off for Rushaga.
Seeing the gorillas up close was a surreal experience. We were able to observe them in their natural habitat, watching them rest, play, and interact. The rangers taught us about gorilla communication, explaining the various sounds and gestures they use to convey messages. It was fascinating to learn about their social structure and behaviors.
The gorilla family we visited in Rushaga was led by a dominant silverback, surrounded by females, juveniles, and infants. Each member of the group played a crucial role, contributing to the tight-knit family unit. The silverback, with his imposing presence, ensured the safety and cohesion of the group, while the females nurtured the young ones and the juveniles played and learned under the watchful eyes of their elders.

The Scenic Views and Rich Culture
Aside from the gorillas, the journey through Bwindi Forest N.P offered breathtaking scenic views. The forest, with its mist-covered hills and verdant landscape, was a sight to behold. The tranquility and beauty of the environment were truly captivating.
We also had the privilege of experiencing the rich culture of the Batwa people. The Batwa, also known as the “keepers of the forest,” shared their traditions and way of life with us. Their knowledge of the forest and its resources was impressive, and their warm hospitality made our visit even more memorable.

In conclusion, our road trip to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The close encounters with the gorillas, the stunning scenery, and the rich cultural interactions made it unforgettable. Thanks to Mishaya Safaris, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty and wonder of Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage.
